Welcome to my e-Portfolio!

I have been telling my students for years about the importance of having an e-portfolio and yet I never could get around to it to create my own… so a few years ago I finally took the plunge! I will be showcasing some of the projects I have done in the past and reflect on some of my current projects as well. I am using ZEN Portfolios, a next generation, WordPress-based, e-portfolio tool. It combines powerful e-portfolio functionality with tools for planning my lifelong learning, staying organized and managing project teams.

While most of my content is right here in my e-portfolio, you can also find me on:

BSYS 1000 – Business Information Systems 1

Once again, teaching the introductory computer application course for the fall semester at BCIT along with comrads Chuck Spong, Ron McMillan, Masoud Jalili, Eddy Fung, Malcolm Ferrier, Ben Whitney and David Meers. It’s another good teaching team and a good group of students, lots of talent!

Here is the course site: BSYS 1000 Fall 2010

For their first project, they created a MS PowerPoint 2007 presentation and converted it into a YouTube video on the topic of why they chose BCIT. Here is a funny one!

eTools101.com launched

It’s always important to use the right tool for the job but with the unprecedented change happening it’s hard to keep up with all the new tools, let alone figure out which ones are best for you.

Ivan Surjanovic and I have just launched, eTools101.com, a site that provides concise reviews of social media tools, productivity tools and other Web tools.

We have been teaching students and businesses how to leverage social media, productivity tools and other Web tools for more than a decade — Cyri at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and ZEN Strategic Consulting Services Inc. and Ivan at Capilano University and iPower Strategy and iPowerLab.

We thought it would be useful for us to have our “master tool list” online and we want to share our eTools list with the public. We hope to post at least one new tool each week so check back often. Hope you find this useful!

Database course

I am currently teaching BSYS 2060 – Business Applications III at BCIT in the School of Business.  The course covers data modeling and MS Access 2007.  In their team project, students build a fully functioning database to help the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation manage their skating lessons across their eight ice rinks.

It’s a pretty informal partnership… they haven’t committed to using the database but hopefully they will find one of the top team submissions meets their needs and they can use or at least it will give them some ideas.

I’m hoping this way students can get some “real life” experience with databases, get beyond the “mouse clicks” of MS Access 2007 and really dig into data modeling… also hoping that the community will benefit from the student’s creativity.

Strategic consulting services in Vancouver, BC area

I finally revised my consulting site, ZEN Strategic Consulting Services Inc.

zenstrategy.ca

It’s still pretty “bare bones” but hopefully sufficient to let people know of the kind of work I do.

I’m quite tied up these days with starting some web businesses along with working for an existing consulting client and teaching so I’m not actively seeking new projects. But if there is one with the right fit, I’m always interested in taking a look. :-)

ERAC

Currently I am involved with a consulting project with the Educational Resources Acquisition Consortium (ERAC), a consortium of the all the public, K-12 school districts across British Columbia and a number of independent schools as well.   Through my consulting company, ZEN Strategic Consulting Services, I am a contractor for ERAC, acting in the capacity as Project Manager.

We are building an Evaluation Resource Information System (ERIS) that is streamlining the evaluation process and making it more automated and accessible to stakeholders.  I should be able to post the public site link to the resource catalogue shortly… target date is end of June, 2009.

Introduction to Project Management

I will be teaching the Introduction to Project Management summer semester course at Capilano University.  It should be an interesting one since the course format has been radically changed and we will also have about 15 exchange students from France.

The curriculum will follow the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) and will help students prepare for the Certicate in Associate Project Management (CAPM) certification.  Individuals with their CAPM have some of the highest average salaries in industry so this should offer some real value to students.  We will also be attending an event at the Canadian West Coast Chapter of the PMI.

Introduction to Marketing

I am currently teaching Introduction to Marketing (BMKT 161) at Capilano University, a course offered during the Summer semester.  The students will be working on a marketing plan for a real life organization along with an individual project developing an e-portfolio through ZEN Portfolios and also setting up their own website and marketing plan brief for their own business idea.
