Our Marketing Research group, SometimesY, decided to use three different marketing research tactics to determine the cause of the decrease in sales. We utilized observation studies, online surveys, and secondary research. The purpose is do determine if it is an internal or external issue causing a decrease in traffic and gross sales.

This research article blog entitled “Online Ratings for Restaurants in Vancouver” is created for the assignment of course BMKT 360 Fall 2009, Marketing Research. This site is simply an overview of online ratings and reviews for Vancouver restaurants based on various aspects such as location, cuision, ambiance, or price. The informative data and comments from the most popular rating websites would be helpful for analyzing customer trends and dietary market in Vancouver for our team project about Earls on Top Restaurant.

I have attended Creating Connections Reception a couple of months ago and found it really inspiring for my business perspective. This event was not only a forum for us to interact with those business professionals in various areas such as marketing, human resource management, or accounting, but also a stage for the entrepreneurs to showcase their featured businesses and share successful experience with the eager future graduates.

During this event, I chatted with some successful business people and introduced my experience and background. As an international students in Vancouver, I concerned about our weaknesses in languages and cultural barriers competing with local applicants for this job, however, the employers around the reception all seems rather welcoming to approach potential foreign candidates to take a chance for future connection. Showing them my plan for future career as well as obtaining their perspectives on working in Vancouver and hiring people overseas kept me involved in the event and made me feel that certain plan about my future is no longer that distant as before.

Since its inception in 2006, Creating Connections’ organizers have made it a point to invite keynote speakers to talk on important, relevant issues in the current economy. Their first event featured the Honourable Carole Taylor, British Columbia’s Minister of Finance. In 2007 they shifted gears and had Bob Elton, the CEO of BC Hydro speak on the environment and for their 2008 event Sheldon Trainor, Head of Asia Investment for Merrill Lynch focused on innovation. This year, 2009, their featured keynote speakers, Doug Smith, Chair of the Spirit of BC for the North Shore and Vice President of Corporate Affairs for North Shore Credit Union, and Michael Campbell, Host of Money Talks and Senior Business Commentator for Global BCTV News highlighted the theme: Innovation, Inspiration and Discovery.

Social marketing is becoming increasingly prevailing. It’s free, easy, and very effective. Below are some reasons to get on board with Social Media Marketing:

1. The spider-web effect. When someone reads something you say and finds it interesting it is very likely they will “Re-post” or “share” your message with their friends. You can take a marketing campaign to great distances. From the moment you post something, it may be weeks before it has finished circulating!

2. Search engine visibility. There are more and more factors arising every day that give your website better visibility on the web. A big factor is having your own business account with these big Social Media sites. The link from these sites to yours tells Google and search engines that you’re in the “loop” and they will prioritize your website over others because of this.

3. Connect with people. Social marketing puts you in the conversation. Help customers solve problems by offering your solution at a personal level. Ease in communication has created more competition for companies, and more alternatives for customers. This is good, and if you’ re not in the “loop,” can be bad. Very important to be in the conversation before the other guy.

Jessica Ye-Stock Tracking Project

I took BCPT101–Computers and Application in the summer term this year, and the content of this course included an introduction to the basic concepts of computer hardware and software, operating systems, applications software and programming, as well as a study of some social and ethical implications of the increasing use of computers. Besides those conceptual studies, I have also gained experience with a microcomputer operating system, various software packages including word processor and Excel spreadsheet, interpreted programming language application, and Web page development.

As showcasing the ability of utilizing Excel spreasheet, I successfully completed a 2-week stock tracking project by creating integrated graphs and processing data with the spreadsheet. Practicing the algorithm design and advanced functions in Excel really inspired me a thought that learning these hi-tech skills would definitely enhance my future career in business.
