Welcome to my e-Portfolio. My name is Karen Wazny and I’ve decided to use my e-Portfolio to help showcase my talents. I’m currently a student at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. I’m enrolled in BCIT’s Marketing Management Program (Professional Sales Option) and I currently work in retail. However, my career goal would be to work in advertising, promotions, or sales on a much larger scale. Please click here for my resume. If you wish to contact me, please click on my Contact page and fill in the form there.
One of the reasons I chose to go to BCIT is the fact that all most every single grad gets a job right away due to the amazing skills learned during their program. BCIT is an amazing school to go to if you have an idea of what type of career you’re looking for. This definately isn’t the school to go to if you’re not ready to work hard.
To achieve your full Bachelor of Business Administation Degree, it onyl takes 3 years compared to most other institutions where it requires atleast 4. That is due to the fact that all of your courses are assigned to you. They are specific to your program to help you learn the most in the least amount of time. It also helps save the hassle of choosing courses and being forced to take filler ones.
BCIT also focuses mainly on the aspect of team work. You’re divided into sets of approximatly 25. Those 25 people become pretty much your friends and family due to the fact that they are in every single class with you. 5 days a week. This is also on top of the enormous amounts of studying required to complete this program. You usually end up going to the 24 hour library after class and staying until atleast 1am, while you’re there, you’re guaranteed to see atleast 4 other people there from your set.
In your set you are actually divided up again into smaller teams of approximately 5. These are the people you will do every project, assignment, and presentation with. The benefit to this is that you don’t really get a chance to learn how people work together before choosing these groups, just like in the working world. You have to learn to work with these strangers to create amazing work. You need to focus on their strengths, and avoid conflict or else it could be a very, very long year working with them.
The course load in BCIT is quite intese. In my first semester of my first year I had 7 courses. It gives a new meaning to the term full time student. I didn’t get to choose which ones they were or my schedule for them. At first I was aprehensive about this but as time went on I’m thankful for it. It definately teaches you to work hard and efficiently which is more than benefical for the future.
These and many other reasons not mentioned yet are why BCIT had helped prepare me for a long and succesful career. I don’t know any other institution that can prepare me for the working world like this one. As well as be surrounded by so many like-minded individuals who are here to work hard and are so moivated to do their best just like me.
For my Marketing course, we had to do a case study for the company Research In Motion specifically for their product the BlackBerry. It was based on helping identify the key problems with the company, come up with unique solutions, and ways to implement them. This project was done using MS Word 2007.

For the next case study, we had to create pricing strategies for a new product designed by a fake compant Canty International. This case study required us to produce a powerpoint presentation for it using MS PowerPoint 2007.

My group memebers and I made a video for one of our classes on why we chose BCIT. It was to describe all the reasons why we chose this amazing school over all the other ones. This was probably my favorite project we have do so far based on the quality of work and the overall look of it. I highly recommend watching it.
For my Business Information Systems class, we had to create an eBook using MS Word 2007 as well as souces from Wikipedia. My partner and I decided to create ours on how to start and create a blog due to its increasing popularity. We had to use our Word 2007 skills to make this layout clean, easy to read, and easy to use. We used applications such as ad table of contents, headers and footers, etc.
It is available for purchase here.
For my Business Communications course, we had to create an individual powerpoint assignment on an recent article of our choosing. We then had to relate the article to marketing in many different ways. This was helpful because it showed me how marketing is around me every day, and almost every single thing has some relation to it.
When I don’t have my nose stuck on my textbooks (which lately has been much too often!) I enjoy going over to Parksville located on Vancouver Island. My family and I have been going there for just over 17 years now and it is a great family place. We have a small condo over there which we purchased in 1999. This place always has and always will have a special place in my heart due to the fact that is reminds me of so many good memories with my family. Actually, most of my favortie memories as a child are from this place. Every time I go there it just reminds me of what matters the most to me, my family, and how much a love them.
I recently attended a social networking event hosted by one of the group members in my set. It was a great opportinuty to meet new people, and get to know my set-mates even more closely. As well as to meet others in various industries and get to know them better.
An organization that is very close to my heart is the Canadian Cancer Society. This past year I lost two very close family members to this terrible disease and now my family and I are dedicated to doing all we can to help others to not have to go what we went through.
This past summer, my family and I decided to participate in the Relay For Life. Its a 24 hour relay to help raise money for cancer. Thanks to the help and support of everyone, we managed to raise close to $2000 for cancer research and this is only the begining for what we can do to help.
- A few members of Team Wazny!
- Our camp for the night
- My siblings and I during the relay
