My name is Lavreet Randhawa and presently, I am a Financial Management student at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). I am a member of the FMA (Financial Management Association) and hope to gain some networking skills and meet influential individuals at the same time!
After I complete my diploma, I plan to seek a career in the field I am passionate about. It would be a dream to work for high corporate accounting firms and financial services. Only the future will tell what’s in store for me!

In our Business Information Systems 2060 class, we learned a whole new program, MICROSOFT ACCESS! Now if you ask me, it is a great tool to create databases and/or organize a efficient business system. My group and I completed a project, which basically was creating a database for a kids’ skating lesson program. I learned how to create and modify reports, queries, forms and tables. This project definitely helped me understand the major concepts associated with Microsoft Access.
Attached is our project and a documentation on how to use data from the access database to run the skating program!
In our Business Information Systems class, my group (also known as, “Team Zebra”) and I prepared a PowerPoint presentation based on why we chose BCIT, and its significant factors!
The first task my group and I were given were, to create our team charter. It seemed like an easy job, but little did we know how hard it was to agree on what the team charter would reflect. After a few days, hours and weeks of tweaking the team charter, we had produced something that we could go to, to solve little problems that could possibly arise.
In Marketing class, my group and I did our first actual case study. It was all about RIM’s Blackberrys’ and Apple’s iPhone. I learned a lot about the mobile phone industry from this case study, and we did a good job completing this assignment!
For our Business Information Systems (BSYS 1000) class, we did an assignment which helped us learn how to format a business style report using Microsoft Word 2007. We had to pick a topic, and then use information from Wikipedia to create an information guide. In addition, when we completed the assignment, we posted it on LuLu.com, to see if we could make some sales!
Our second case study was fictional, and was all about “Canty International,” which is a producer of wall systems and coverings. Our main task in this case study was to figure out pricing for a new product that Canty was going to introduce into the market.
At BCIT, many clubs and associations are available for students to join. Just recently, I have joined the FMA to help me explore the world of finance and accounting!
FMA will help me :
Meet and network with many industry professionals
Find possible jobs and give me career direction
Build my career tools (resume, interview skills, cover letter etc)
Gain leadership opportunities within the school
FMA has a lot to offer, and I look forward to all the exciting things that I will experience in respect to the association!
I work as a seasonal employee at CRA - Canada Revenue Agency. My job title at CRA is, mail exam worker, and I sort tax returns from people all over Canada. This job has taught me many aspects of the accounting and the auditing career field.
For a part time job, I currently work at Save On Foods. I have been working as a cashier for two years now, and I have learned customer service skills and how to manage money. The skills that I have learned have helped me prepare for my future career as well as achieve goals and interact effectively.
In our BSYS – Business Information Systems class, we got the opportunity to learn how to use MS Excel, efficiently and effectively. We learned how to create a 10×10 Multiplication Table by inserting a properly set up mixed cell reference in one cell and copying it over to other cells in the table.
This exercise helped to understand the differences between; relative vs. absolute vs. mixed cellreferencing in MS Excel 2007.
Basketball isn’t just a sport, it is a part of my life. I have been playing basketball my whole life, and I absoloutely adore it! The scoring, the running, the teams, the fun, I love it all. It is also a source of exercise, and I try to play as much as I can around my busy schedule of school and work. Even though I don’t get to play it as much as I did before, it will always be one of my favourite hobbies!
